TRENTON, NJ - Clarke Caton Hintz Architects is proud to announce
that we have been selected as the Architects for the Mineola Intermodal
Center Parking Garage located in Mineola, Long Island, New York. The
project sponsor is the Metropolitan Transportation Authority - Long
Island Railroad (MTA LIRR).
This project is a $23 Million
Design/Build parking structure which, when completed, will contain (4)
levels, accommodate 955 cars, (8) CNG (compressed natural gas) buses,
and separate offices for Garage Management, Long Island Bus, and
Metropolitan Transportation Police.
The garage has been designed
to compliment the proposed Mineola Downtown Revitalization Plan and the
immediate surroundings. The garage facade is composed of brick and
precast concrete elements, along with decorative precast concrete
pilasters with tile inserts to match a nearby historic bridge. Each of
the stair towers and the elevator will be clad in aluminum panels and
clear glass. The same aluminum and glass aesthetic will be utilized for
an enclosed pedestrian bridge which will be constructed to connect the
garage, Mineola Station platforms, and ground level. The entire garage
and overpass will be ADA compliant and will provide the area with
improved handicapped access.
The Long Island Railroad customer
demand for parking far exceeds the number of spaces available in the
existing surface parking lots in the vicinity of Mineola Station. This
project seeks to supplement existing parking spaces by constructing a
four level intermodal center & parking structure adjacent to LIRR's
Mineola Station.
Of the 955 cars, 705 are for public parking and
250 are spaces necessary to support adjacent private office buildings.
The Intermodal Center includes an intermodal area to accommodate buses
from MTA Long Island Bus to enhance bus transportation in and around
the station area. The Intermodal Center will allow commuters to
comfortable and safely transfer between cars, trains, buses, and nearby
taxis.
Mineola is located in Nassau County, New York on the
Port Jefferson branch, at the junction of Oyster Bay and Port Jefferson
branches. Mineola Station has a "Designated Use Level 2", which
represents the LIRR servicing between 2,000 to 6,000 customers on a
typical weekday.
The project is federally funded, and
therefore, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations and
guidelines are applicable to this project.
Our Design/Build partners in this effort are:
