TRENTON, NJ - The long awaited Phase I restoration of Morven, the c. 1758 former governor's mansion in Princeton, NJ, was completed last Fall. Morven was the home of Richard Stockton, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his descendents for almost 200 years, and was the governor's mansion from 1954 to 1981. Phase I included some of the most dramatic work, including the restoration of the exterior of the main house, the restoration of the interior and exterior of the Wash House, and the restoration of most of the gardens.
Design work for Phase II is now underway. This Phase will complete the restoration of the interior while transforming this National Historic Landmark into a world-class museum for fine and decorative arts. When Phase II is complete, the long and important history of Morven, the Stockton family and the governors can be told through the carefully preserved historic fabric. All new systems and lighting will also allow the exhibition of permanent and changing fine and decorative arts collections.
