CCH participates in Pleasant Run Stream Buffer Reforestation Volunteer Planting Day
October 4, 2007
The Readington Township Pleasant Run Stream Buffer Reforestation Volunteer Planting Day took place on Saturday, September 29 with a second group finishing up the next day.
Michael Sullivan, partner at Clarke Caton Hintz, joined over 60 volunteers from Readington Township, and nearby communities, to plant a total of 250 native trees and shrubs along both banks of Pleasant Run. After planting, volunteers also carried water to the plants, placed rodent guards around the stems, and constructed and erected protective deer cages around them.
One hundred eighty-six (186) trees and shrubs were bought with funds from a USDA/ NRCS grant and 64 were donated by Readington landscaper Keith Nicholson, who also generously provided a crew to mow the area and dig the planting holes. Coffee and bagels to keep the group fueled were provided by the members of the planning group and the volunteers themselves, along with a bushel of apples donated by Agresti’s Orchard. Water for the plants was provided by neighboring farm owners, Jim Brightwell and Jim Duffy.
Volunteers included individuals and families as well as members of the following groups:
• Students of Readington Middle School • Students from Hunterdon Central High School • Raritan Valley Community College • Somerset/ Hunterdon Master Gardeners • Rutgers Environmental Stewards • Readington Township Committee • Several Readington Township boards and commissions
