• Restoration of a former barn for use as an office building
|
The Barn represents the second phase of construction at Millstone Park. Clarke Caton Hintz had previously designed the renovation of the Benjamin Gray House for new offices. That work also included a large addition that was designed to match the style and vocabulary of the original. Both of these structures are located in the historic Aqueduct region of Plainsboro, New Jersey and date to the Civil War era.
The rehabilitation of the barn maintained many of its historic features. The entire heavy timber construction was reinforced and the design of the interior strives to enhance this beautiful construction. New clapboard siding was installed to replace the deteriorated existing siding. Additionally, new wood windows were installed to brighten the office space with natural light. The plan includes an open office layout space for maximum flexibility and to enhance the historical quality of the timber framing. A new mezzanine was installed at the location of the former hay loft. New barrier-free bathrooms and kitchenettes were created, and a new egress stair was added.
