This pre-Civil War structure is located in the historic Aqueduct region of Plainsboro, New Jersey. Clarke Caton Hintz was retained to renovate this historic house, with a proposed addition, into 10,000 sf of office space. The building was restored as much as possible, with the addition designed to match the style and vocabulary of the original.
The rehabilitation maintained many of the historic features of the building. Original wood clapboard siding and windows were salvaged and repaired. The beautiful wood cornice, trim and porch were also restored. Using historic photographs, new cornice brackets and cedar shutters were added to depict the building as it stood at the turn of the century. On the interior, much of the existing layout has remained to create individual offices. All of the existing wood moldings and trim were repaired and reused. The chimneys were reopened, retaining existing mantels, to become operable fireplaces. In addition, much of the existing wood flooring was refinished.
The new addition includes more office space, workrooms, conference rooms and accessible bathrooms. Using the historic features as “touchstones”, the addition was designed in a style to present the complex as a unified whole. Phase II of the project included renovations to the existing barn structure into leasable office space.
