The Cracker Factory is an exciting urban redevelopment and historic preservation project that transforms a complex of beautiful but underutilized 19th and early 20th century industrial buildings into a loft condominium project of 18 unique one and two bedroom units. The overall redevelopment project, includes more than 30 loft condominiums and single family units and transforms four blocks of the Ferry Historic District in Trenton’s South Ward.
The Cracker Factory was built, beginning in 1847, by Adam and John Exton who founded the world- renowned A. Exton & Co. These brothers were the inventors of, among other things, the ubiquitous Oyster Cracker. Most of the buildings have beautiful wood detailing on the exterior, as well as multi-colored brick corbelling. On the interior, brick walls, heavy timber and steel structure with tall, sloped ceilings provide the design inspiration for this adaptive reuse project.
The exterior of the building was restored, the brickwork cleaned and re-pointed, the wood cornices and trim repaired and new, energy efficient, historically appropriate windows installed. The interior has been completely reconfigured. One unit, which totals almost 3000sf on two levels, is located in the original baking area and has a beautiful arched ceiling and terra cotta floors. In addition to taking advantage of the historic character of the building, the units have been designed to be extremely energy efficient and to use sustainable design features. In addition to the sustainable features, every unit has its own garage and most have their own garden and/or balcony space.
