SPECIALTY AREA
Highway Corridors
Suburban strip development presents a number of planning challenges. As post World War II development spread from central cities to suburbs, many arterial roads were developed with automobile-oriented development. As newer and more attractive forms of commercial uses were created, older highway corridors suffered from marginal uses and a lack of investment. In newly suburbanizing areas, civic leaders express concern about a seemingly relentless wave of strip development that changes the character of their community and exponentially increases traffic congestion. In urbanized areas, proposed widenings to improve traffic flow create a conflict with community and historic preservation objectives. Clarke Caton Hintz creates highway corridor plans with a context sensitive design for these situations, the historic town, the declining strip and the suburbanizing highway. By taking a comprehensive approach to land use, an insightful analysis, knowledge of regulatory possibilities and the firm's design background, Clarke Caton Hintz has developed highway corridor plans utilizing context sensitive design to meet the goals set by the municipality, county or state.
